The Inadvertent Insider: A Target of Opportunity
How public expressions of workplace dissatisfaction led to a spear-phishing email, a watering hole attack, and tough conversations with HR
On Saturday, April 8, 2023, the day before Easter Sunday, two women showed up via Uber to their 7:00 p.m. dinner reservation at Rooster’s Wood-Fired Kitchen Uptown in Charlotte, North Carolina. “Maya,” a resident of Charlotte, had moved there from “up north” in 2014 when she got a junior software developer role after completing graduate school. Her friend, “Rose,” was her college roommate from '“up north,” who now lived in Stamford, Connecticut. Rose was visiting North Carolina for the first time during the 2023 Easter weekend.
Their dinner was a little over two hours long. They talked about Maya’s life in North Carolina and Rose’s life in Connecticut, what was new with their respective families, Rose’s upcoming wedding, Maya’s work situation, and more. Maya had parmesan cream gnocchi with braised short ribs, roasted okra, and green tomatoes, topped with pecorino. Rose had the quarter Joyce Farms natural BBQ chicken with Carolina gold rice.
